Red Cross Offers Water Safety Tips
By:Jennifer Edwards - June 27, 2016
Summer means water fun for many, but water activities also can bring dangers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 10 people die from unintentional drowning every day. Unintentional drowning is the leading cause of death for children between 1 and 4 years old, according to the CDC.
The American Red Cross recommends swimming instruction, swimming in pairs and constant, attentive adult supervision to limit youth water accidents and drownings.
Proper use of U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets is another layer of protection. The Red Cross warns against using inflatables, floats or water wings as a substitute for a life jacket.
When a person appears to be struggling in water, the Red Cross recommends throwing or reaching with a rescue flotation device or something else to reach the person in the water instead of swimming to them to prevent the endangerment of the rescuers.
